Candidate Biographies - SETA Board Election 2011

Ian Becker, Oracle DBA

Marist College

I have been working at Marist College in various roles for over 10 years where I have been an Oracle DBA for the last four during our conversion to Banner. As a result I became very involved with SETA. In 2008 I first attended and presented at the Phoenix conference. I have since attended at least one SETA conference per year and have presented almost a dozen times.

Most recently in this last year I was the technical track chair for the Minneapolis conference and I am the current program chair for the upcoming conference in Atlanta. Additionally I will be one of the counselors at th SETA Code Camp for mobile being held as a pre-conference workshop.

One of the great perks of working in education is to be able to share work with others. This has afforded me the opportunity to submit some of my source code to the SETA code repository for others to use. This sharing of information is a great part of the networking that occurs at the SETA meetings, and part of the valuable resources that greatly assisted during our school's conversion to Banner.

I was not only fortunate enough to play an active role in SETA these last few years, but have also had the opportunity to work closely with SunGard. Marist played a lead role in the creation of Community Source, which allows schools to submit modifications to SunGard that were made to Banner to then be included in the baseline product. This allows for changes to be implemented faster as well as relief from maintaining all the code in-house.

This last year I worked closely with SunGard on the development of the Community Source Code Repository allowing schools to collaborate with each other, as well as act as an end point for some Community Source projects that do not get put into baseline. I was also on the Continuous Integration focus group that analyzed the patch/upgrade process for Banner modules. This focus group made improvements to the delivery cycle in an effort to lessen the errors. Work in this focus group opened the door for me to be a part of a new group starting up for a Consolidated Install. This group will work on a single cumulative upgrade to alleviate the need to apply numerous upgrades/patches to get to the latest release of a module.

It is probably common knowledge that SunGard announced "The Commons" as a replacement for the listservs many have grown accustomed to. This may not have been an easy transistion for some, causing SunGard to reach out after this year's past Summit to create a Customer Advisory Board. I immediately joined the group because I can see the long term benefits of The Commons, but am aware that some changes need to be made to meet that goal. Participation in the Advisory Board will afford me the chance to voice some of the needed changes.

My greatest accomplishment to date has been to get Banner to run on an IBM z9/z10 mainframe, earning Marist College the Innovation Award at NACUBO last September.

Bobbie Brown (Latham), Registrar

Texas Tech University

I believe that membership and significant participation in professional organizations allow people to grow as individuals. SETA is a professional organization that has allowed me to grow not only as an individual, but as an employee of the Texas Tech University Registrar’s Office. I have met many colleagues from around the United States who have proved to be essential when I have professional questions. Some of these colleagues have become close personal friends. The SETA conferences are important because they allow us all to communicate with each other regarding the issues we all face on a daily basis.

I have been involved with SETA since 2004. I have served as conference track chair, program chair, and conference chair multiple times and have presented at and moderated many sessions for SETA. Having served on the SETA Board since 2007, I understand the unique relationship SETA and SunGard Higher Education enjoy as well as the opportunities that may be afforded to SETA members and member institutions.

I am honored to be nominated to serve on the SETA Board of Directors for a second term. If elected to service, I look forward to bringing to the Board my professional knowledge and skills in recognizing leadership potential in others and providing opportunities to SETA member and member institutions.

I appreciate your consideration in the election for the SETA Board of Directors. Thank you.

Ron Town, Assistant Director, Business Process Management

University of Idaho

Ron began his higher education career at University of Idaho in 1990 as an accountant. His interest and knowledge of computing systems was recognized and he assisted in the selection process and joined the implementation team of the Banner system in 1993. Ron was primarily responsible for the implementation of Banner Finance and Accounts Receivable and assisted in the implementation of the General and Human Resources modules. He continued to lead the development of finance and accounts receivable as well as the integration of TouchNet Payment Gateway and Marketplace, Evisions Intellecheck, Argos and Forms Fusion, the campus one card system and document imaging. In 2006 the Banner Human Resources team joined his staff to better integrate with Banner Finance. Additionally he managed projects to develop many "sub-modules" to the Banner system for functionality not or not yet, delivered in Banner. In early 2007 he was asked to step up and take on additional responsibility over Accounting Services on campus in addition to the business systems. In 2010 Ron was again asked to lead a new initiative on campus for business process management. He continues his responsibility of the Banner Finance, Accounts Receivable, General and Human Resources modules in his new role.

Ron served as chair of two key committees that guide the direction of administrative systems on campus. For nine years he chaired the administrative developers group. This group managed the software and scheduled all work done to the integrated systems to minimize the impact to end users. This experience has exposed him to all modules of the Banner system. The second committee, which he served as chair, is composed of director level staff with primary stakes in the administrative systems. This group is strategic in nature and develops plans and funding strategies for the institutional administrative systems. This group has recently been reformed to more clearly define the future of administrative systems for the institution as well as make decisions of priority and resource allocation to administrative systems.

Ron has attended SunGard TCP and Summit conferences since 1994. He presented and participated in panels and BOF's during many of the conferences. Beginning his service to SETA in 2002 he served as the Finance Track Chair. In subsequent years he has also served as the track chair for Financial Aid (2004) and General (2005), Program Chair in 2006 and Conference Chair in 2007. In 2007 Ron was elected to the SETA Board of Directors. There he served his first year as Director at Large and the last two years as Treasurer for the organization.

Ron’s experience with the Banner product and leadership in computing systems at the University of Idaho will lend to the direction of the SETA organization. He wishes to continue his service SETA and participate in building its future.
